The cooled air that becomes warmer as it circulates in the home returns to the air conditioning unit though return ducts.
Do You Need a Packaged Unit or a Split-System?
Central air conditioning systems come in two basic forms – packaged units and split systems.
- Packaged units. Packaged central air conditioning systems come with the air conditioner, the condenser, the compressor, and the evaporator in a single outdoor unit. The unit usually finds a place on a concrete slab around the home’s foundation or on the roof. These systems tend to include natural gas furnaces or electric heating coils. This does away with the need for a separate indoor furnace.
- Split systems. With a spilt system, you will be looking at the condenser and the compressor in an outdoor metal unit, and the evaporator is housed in an indoor unit. In some models, a furnace or a heat pump is also part of the indoor unit. If you already have a furnace in your home, getting a spilt system air conditioning unit might be your best bet.
